Candle Sand for Weddings & Events
Candlelight for a whole room, without a single jar to throw away at the end of the night.
Candle sand is loose pearled wax. You pour it into vessels you already have — rented glassware, thrifted votives, ceramic bowls, hurricane vases — set a cotton wick, and light it. When the night is over there is no wax welded into rented glass, no crate of half-burned pillars, and nothing to bin. The sand goes back in the pouch and comes out again for the next event.
How much candle sand do I need?
One 500 g bag of Tula candle sand covers roughly two to three medium centerpieces. How far it actually goes depends entirely on how deep your vessels are, so here is the honest version:

These are approximations. Fill deeper and you use more; a shallow pour looks just as good and stretches further.

Why planners choose it over pillar candles
- Nothing to collect at the end of the night. No jars, no wax fused to rented glassware, no crate of stubs going into storage.
- Safer on a crowded table. If a guest knocks a vessel over, the flame goes out on its own. There is no pool of hot wax and no broken glass to clear around dresses and children.
- Unscented, on purpose. It will not fight the food, the flowers or anyone's perfume — and no guest with a fragrance sensitivity has to leave the table.
- Fast to set up. Pour, set a wick, move on. No trimming and no lighting fifty separate candles that then burn down at fifty different rates.
- The vessel is your decision. The look comes from your glassware and your table, not from whatever container a candle happened to be sold in.
- You can reset between services. Drop in a fresh wick, top up the sand, and the table is ready again.
Setting up on the day
- Pour the candle sand into each heat-safe vessel, roughly 1–2″ deep.
- Set a wick in the centre of each, leaving about ¼″ exposed above the sand.
- Light just before guests arrive. Each cotton wick burns for about 12 hours, so one wick comfortably covers a whole reception.
- Reset afterwards by replacing the wick and topping up the sand.
Keep 2″ of clearance around each flame, use only heat-safe vessels, and never leave burning candles unattended. Check with your venue about open flame before you plan around it — some ballrooms and historic buildings restrict it.
Vessel ideas that photograph well
- Clear glass cylinders at three heights down the centre of a long table — the simplest thing that always looks considered.
- Coupe glasses or vintage crystal for a low, glittering table that does not block sightlines across dinner.
- Ceramic or stone bowls for a warmer, quieter table — good with linen and dried florals.
- Black sand in clear glass for a graphic, modern look, and for autumn and Halloween events.
- Black and white layered in a tall cylinder if you want the vessel itself to be the decoration.
Common questions
Does it smell? No. Tula candle sand is completely unscented. If you want fragrance, add a few drops of essential oil to the pearls yourself — that way you control how much.
How long does one wick burn? About 12 hours. Each 500 g bag includes 20 wicks.
Is it safe around pets and children? The wax is plant-based, paraffin-free and non-toxic, and if a vessel tips the flame extinguishes itself rather than spilling burning wax. Normal open-flame precautions still apply.
Can we reuse what is left? Yes — that is the point. Let it cool, return it to the pouch, and use it again.
What vessels can we use? Anything heat-safe: glass, ceramic, metal or stone. Not plastic, and not anything with a glued base.
How far in advance should we order? Order at least two weeks before the event so you have time to test one vessel and see how deep you like the pour.
